The three women in Tom Cox's life - first sexual partner, first love and wife - lead him on different paths through love's intricate maze to a destination he least expects.

 

Tom's marriage is threatened by his excess drinking. He's forced to confront unresolved pain in his past.

Back in 1968 Tom is an art student in Aix-en-Provence. He's down on his luck. Lonely divorcée Madou helps him financially in return for sexual favours. With the student rebellion threatening to topple the French government, Tom falls in love with fellow student Agnès and finds his loyalties stretched to breaking point.

Fifty years on, Tom revisits Aix and, by examining the twists and turns of these relationships, attempts to untangle the emotional knots.
